Fifteen

I stared at Gideon, wondering if I possibly could have misunderstood his declaration. “Excuse me?”

Gideon nodded as if to assure me that he’d spoken the truth. He was, in fact, a demon.

My difficulties didn’t come from not hearing him. Or not knowing what a demon was. I thought I did. At least for the most part. But my mind refused to connect the two, to believe that the handsome man sitting before me with uncertainty written all over his face was, in fact, a dark entity.

Yes, I’d sensed a darkness before, but not that kind.

It took several moments before my better senses finally kicked in. He wasn’t serious. No. He’d been teasing me. Making fun of what he would consider my unfounded fear of him. The joke was on me.

I snorted. “Dear Goddess, you almost had me believing that one.”

Gideon gave me a gentle smile and squeezed my hand. He held my gaze for several moments, and then his lovely blue eyes darkened into obsidian. The sight was such a shock that I inhaled sharply, causing me to choke.

The color of his eyes returned to normal as he removed his hand from mine. He lifted my water glass and held it out to me. I swallowed, calming the suffocating feeling, but then I kept swallowing and swallowing, knowing that as long as I did, he couldn’t expect me to speak.

It was a brief but much needed reprieve.

When the glass was empty, I set it carefully on the table in front of me. Slowly, I lifted my gaze to him.

He arched a questioning brow, waiting for a response from me.

The only problem was that I didn’t have one. I held out for several uncomfortable seconds and then spoke. “I don’t know what to say to that.”

He started to speak, but then our server arrived with dinner and placed our plates before us. “Everything look okay?”

Gideon turned his gaze upward to the young man, and I swear his eyes darkened again. “It looks delicious. Thank you. And now, we require some private time. I’ll signal you when you’re needed again.”

A deep blush colored the poor kid’s cheeks. “Yes, sir.” With that, he hurried away.

Instead of lifting his fork, Gideon focused on me. “I don’t ask that you say much, Daisy. I would just like to know if you’re comfortable being in my presence now that you know what I am.”

A million thoughts raced through my mind but feeling scared wasn’t one of them. Maybe it should have been. Still, he was the same Gideon that he’d been a few minutes before. The same charming man who’d flirted and danced with me at the Beltane Festival.

But, of course, I’d been in the dark about him, then, so I hadn’t been looking for warning signs. I wondered if it would be careless on my part to continue to talk to him? Dangerous even?

When I finally responded, I said the only thing that I could formulate into decent words. “I’m not afraid of you, if that’s what you’re asking.
